Poor information at point of diagnosis

I care for my wife, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's a couple of years ago. Our GP told us that her symptoms were indicative of Parkinson's before she was diagnosed formally at the hospital, but there was no further advice offered around coping with the disease - for both the patient and carer. A doctor should automatically provide information about support - or at least signpost to someone who can - as soon as the person and their family member present to the surgery. I didn't know what support for carers was available.
