Original Feedback for Market Surgery:

Unnecessary referal process

In January 2021 I had a scan which determined that I had a paraumbical hernia. After a prompt to the Surgery requesting an explanation of the findings and further procedure, I was given a phone consultation with a doctor. Because I am suffering no pain or complications it was agreed that no current action was necessary, but at my request I said perhaps I could go on a waiting list for keyhole surgery to repair the hernia before it caused problems. Only a week later I received a call from a 'Referal department' explaining I would need to see a surgeon before an operation could take place. I was told that my two nearest hospital NNUH in Norwich and Cromer Hospital did not carry out hernia repairs and I would need to go to James Paget in Lowestoft. I agreed to this referral. Last week I received a letter from this hospital inviting me to have a video referral on 17th May, which was carried out yesterday. The process was very well organised and involved a slight wait but I then I spoke to the Surgeon - sorry can't pronouce the name - who after thoroughly checking all my details, told me that the hospital is currently not repairing hernias and all GP's Surgerys had been advised of this. My concern is regarding the complete waste of everyones time to advise me of this. All the 'referral department' - telephone call, referral to James Paget, letter from James Paget, staff required for video consultation, but more importantly a Surgeon required to tell me that they can't carry out an operation. The cost of all this and the waste of resources is pitiful.
