NHS England commissions primary care services, for example GPs, dentists and opticians. Although, for GPs (primary medical services) this is devolved to most CCGs through primary care co-commissioning.
NHS England also directly commissions ‘specialised’ services (such as treatments for rare conditions and secure mental health care), military and veteran health services and health services for people in prisons (including youth offender institutions). Some public health services are also directly commissioned by NHS England.

Unable to find dentist
13th May 2022I was dtpped from NHS list as missed an appointment, they had not updated contact number and email to remind me, even though this had happened for a previous alpointment and left correct details that time. Now two fillings have fallen out and can't find a dentist anywhere NHS or even get on a list. Private cannot get taken on either, really stuck don't know where to go from here. Feel very aggrieved as still paying national insurance.

Dentist
13th May 2022My nhs dentist told me to go and buy a new nail file and some tooth cement to fill the whole in my tooth after I’d filed it… So shocked by this I had to go private d have expensive painful treatment. Extractions too . The stress and financial loss this has caused me has been horrendous.

Shortage of NHS dentists in Norfolk
19th April 2022I have seen from your website that you are already aware of a shortage of NHS dentists in Norfolk. I am writing to let you know of my experience and to add my name to the list of complainants who do not think that this is acceptable. I pay my taxes and it is unfair that some can get treatment and not others. I cannot understand why the NHS cannot pay private dentists to take NHS patients as they have paid private hospitals to treat NHS medical patients during the pandemic to ease the burden on our overstretched hospitals. I do not think enough effort is being made to resolve this issue. Dental problems apart from being painful can lead to more serious health problems. I broke a tooth during the first lockdown. I called my dentist who was closed at that time and he prescribed me antibiotics which cleared up the infection that had developed. As soon as the surgery was open again I called to make an appointment to fix the tooth and the receptionist told me that I was no longer on their register as a patient because I had not seen them for some time. I complained and explained that my dentist had prescribed treatment in the months prior to my phone call but she said there was nothing she could do, they couldn't see me and their waiting list was full. I then tried to get an emergency appointment at other dentists but no one could see me. I learned to live with the broken tooth but continued to search for a dentist. I live in Norwich and work in Fakenham and I have called or emailed every NHS dental surgery around and between these two areas on several occasions but to no avail. I cannot find an NHS dentist. It is now 2 years since I broke my tooth and the cost of fixing it privately will run to several hundred pounds. I feel that I am left with no choice to get private care and this takes the responsibility away from the NHS who I feel have a duty of care to treat me. I am aware that there is little you can do about this but am hoping that if more people share their experience the NHS will have no choice but to sort this problem out.

I've had to go private
28th March 2022I moved to Norfolk in October and I've been unable to find an NHS dentist. In the end I've had to go private, which is costing me £25 a month even if I'm not using.

Cannot get an NHS dentist!
24th March 2022It's impossible to get an NHS dentist. My ex-partner even had to pull his own tooth out during lockdown because he was in that much pain and just couldn't get in to see anyone.

No NHS Dentist in Norfolk
21st March 2022I have tried for the last few years to try and get a NHS dentist in Norfolk but there are none. I have registered with a private one now which I can't really afford so took out a Den Plan but that has now gone up £5 a month. What with everything else going up I am not sure I am going to be able to afford to go to a dentist.

Can't find an NHS dentist
18th March 2022We can't find an NHS dentist in Norfolk. We've spent two years trying to find one. It's cost over a thousand pound to get work done privately now. It's frustrating because when we've called we've been told we can't get NHS but can be seen tomorrow privately. We got to one in Gorleston privately because it's cheaper than a lot of the other private dentists but it's still a lot of money. I did manage to get an emergency extraction during the pandemic but nothing else was offered, I was only able to have an extraction. Because of the issues I was having with my teeth I got an infection and had vertigo for over a year. I even called an ambulance at one stage because I was feeling so unwell. They weren't able to get my treatment but I did get an NHS extraction very quickly and my doctors gave me antibiotics beforehand.

Lack of NHS dentists
17th March 2022I was left in agony for almost three weeks due to the lack of NHS dentists and no dentists being available. Three of my teeth had to be removed under sedation due to infection and decay due to not being able to see a dentist. The practice I visited was lovely unfortunately they were not taking on new patients. Absolutely nowhere seem to be doing any type of prevention, unless you are part of a practice.
