no communication

Father admitted due to abnormal pancreas blood tests on Easton Ward. CT scans carried early in the morning and informed of a 5cm mass in pancreas, told he would be discussed at an upcoming MDT. And that is where the communication has ended. I called MDT co-ordinator, informed me of when MDT taking place and I requested they contacted my father to reassure him. They did do this and called after MDT to say he needs a biopsy and will be re-discussed at MDT. Still no biospy appointment, Nurse coordinator unable to locate any booking and now unlikely to occur before the aforementioned MDT date. It is not acceptable that a patient with a high suspicion of cancer is discharged from hospital with no real action plan in place, has not received any outpatient appointments and is left to be at home in absolute agony. He should be on a 2 week wait as cancer is suspected and he is not. Pancreatic cancer is aggressive and action needs to occur immediately. It is not ok to rely upon the patient and their families to navigate the system themselves. I work in Oncology, I even did my undergraduate training at NNUH and have worked there previously. I am embarrassed that this is the sub-optimal care the NNUH delivers. I am appalled by the lack of communication or timeliness of anything!. Fortunately, I do have the knowledge of what questions to ask and what patients are entitled to, others do not have that benefit of insight.
