Struggle to get NHS dental appointment

I can't work out why it's impossible to get an NHS dentist locally? My son is on universal credit so it exempt from paying for dental appointments. He's needing a tooth out. He had an appointment booked but just before the appointment it was cancelled. We've been given an appointment a few times but just before the date they cancel it. Sometimes they only give us a day's notice and don't rebook the appointment when they cancel it. I think the last time I had a check was three years ago. I don't know why we should have to go private? We've worked all our lives and paid our taxes towards it. We live in Gorleston and can't afford to travel elsewhere to go to the dentist.
