Phoning for an appointment poor system

I can never get through on the phone to see a GP on a day when I need to. I have had to get in the car to reach the surgery, to ask to see a GP about an unexplained medical occurrence which was distressing me only to be turned away in tears and wait at home until mid afternoon for a GP to ring. I am not vulnerable, have no obvious long term health issues so talking to a GP over the phone now is seen to be effective. How can any doctor diagnose effectively without seeing the patient? It is cutting corners on vital care if you ask me.
