Department: Ear Nose And Throat

Not a good experience. Blatantly rude member of staff.
On 9 October 2026 I had an appointment in the ENT dept at James Paget Hospital at Gorleston. It was 3pm as I approached the reception desk in ENT. The woman at the reception desk did see me approaching but put her head down to do her paperwork and ignored me for three or four minutes. I waited, leaning on my walking stick, until eventually and without looking up at me she snapped out "Name?" I told her, or rather, I told the top of her head. Still without looking up at me she then confirmed ... my address and phone number and told me to take a seat. All this without looking at me or giving me any greeting at all. I appreciate that she was busy but it doesn't take much to make eye contact and smile and say something like "Won't keep you a moment" or "Sorry to keep you waiting". I was quite taken aback at such blatant rudeness as the staff at James Paget are usually so very nice and polite. The dept was very busy, and running late, but a nurse did keep coming out to update the crowded waiting room on progress. Even so, I had to wait one hour and 40 minutes for a 10 minute consultation.

Zero stars, poor communication
I went for my routine eye injection in June and was suddenly quarantined as they said I had CPE which had been found in a swab taken two years previously, which I had not been notified of. I asked to speak to infection control myself and this was denied. The ward sister kept going back and forth to find answers to my questions, I can't fault her. They finally told her my GP should have told me the test results.
I've spoken to my GP and she was not notified of either the test or the results and
... she contacted the consultant microbiologist for answers. He told her I was a carrier, not infectious, so I didn't need to be told the result.
I'm not happy with how this has been handled. Why was there a two year delay? Why couldn't I speak to infection control? No guidelines were given to me about risks to others or myself. I've been worried about passing it to other people, and also as I'm immunocompromised myself, worried about my own health. On the day of my appointment I wasn't allowed to use the toilet despite having to wait to be seen at the last appointment. It also didn't appear that there were proper processes in place for how the ward should have responded.
I'm concerned that in those two years I have had multiple other hospital treatments where this wasn't raised.

Quick turnaround
Requested an appointment as I was experiencing problems with my hearing aids. Offered an appointment sooner than I could attend due to other commitments - so how good was that. Great experience when I did attend, hearing aids replaced and I was on my merry way in no time

Much improved ward
It's much improved since a couple of years ago. The difference seems to be that they give the nurses a patient each to look after, not one nurse to lots of kids, so it's more structured and organised. They're so lovely. The cleaning is better and there's not so much waiting around for tests. The car park screen has been modernised too which is good to see. I'll give them a strong four out of five which has only been dropped down because the ward environment could do with a bit of a budget given ... to them.

Nice nurses
The playroom was good, nothing was broken. The nurses were nice, they told me what was happening.
