Wait put me off

Submitted by Anonymous5th February 2019
I was given information about the Wellbeing service from my surgery. When I tried to contact them they said that there was a 8 week wait. I thought in that time I would feel better! I didn't pursue it, I don't feel any better and nothing is happening now.
I'm not exactly sure what the wellbeing service does to be honest. The group sessions seem pretty futile for people with severe anxiety - and they're rarely offered any form of ongoing support. The needs just aren't being met for so many people.
Firstly, I was surprised to find out that the doctor couldn't refer to me to the wellbeing service, I had to get in touch with them myself. Once I did get in touch I discovered that the waiting lists for any kind of initial support was over six months; I've got seasonal affective disorder, so by the time I had waited six months it was summer and I wasn't suffering the same way I was before. When I eventually got to see someone, it was as part of a group session, which for someone with moderate anxiety and depression is not the best environment. I continued with the course anyway, and also had the opportunity to speak to psychological wellbeing practitioners at the service on a one-to-one basis. However, everything was based around the concept of CBT, and I was never able to see the same person more than once. I can see how that would work for some people, but I didn't find them very helpful myself. I think the kind of treatment you need depends on your personality; I needed more ongoing personal support, but options like that just weren't available.
Me and my daughter both used Wellbeing. I'm still a social member, I did several courses and socials are all very good. I would say you get a lot of information packs to read but there is too much, you can't take it in when you're in a bad place. Courses are good though
I am dealing with the mental health issues that come with being a carer. I was recommended to see a psychiatrist, and not offered much.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback and we were sorry to hear that you did not find the support offered helpful. We would be keen to speak with you to establish what difficulties you are experiencing and how we can help with these. Within Wellbeing we do not have access to a Psychiatrist and so we would be keen to establish who recommended this. Please call us on 0300 123 1503 and ask to speak to a Service Manager.

3 year waiting list

When I was HAVING CBT it was great, but it was a 3 year waiting list. I got an indefinite number of sessions until I'm better. CBT helped, and the therapist was absolutely brilliant.

Thank you for your feedback and we were pleased to hear that you found the CBT you received helpful. It was concerning to read that you waited 3 years for this as this time scale does not reflect the wait for treatment now or at anytime in the past. We are aware that waits for treatment are longer than we would like and we continue to work hard to reduce these but they certainly do not extend to this length of time. It would be good to hear from you so that we can look into this. We were also surprised to hear that you were offered indefinite sessions. As a service, we follow NICE guidelines which recommend an average of 6-12 sessions of CBT for Depression and/or Anxiety.
Wait for support is too long

I am seeing a counsellor now and she is fantastic and she is really helping me. However, it took me two years to receive this support which really is too long. People need support sooner.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback and we are pleased to hear that you are finding the counselling you are having with the Wellbeing Service of use. We were sorry to hear that you waited for such a long time to access this. There are waits for treatment due to the demand for the service and it's limited capacity to meet this demand. However, two years is not acceptable and far longer than any waiting time that we are currently aware of. It would be good to hear from you directly so that we can look into this.
Very helpful telephone counselling

I went through to the service online because I was suffering with anxiety. I had telephone appointments with a counsellor who was very helpful. I think the wait time for face to face counselling can be quite long if you aren't keen on telephone appointments.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such positive feedback. It's always great to hear when someone has found the service helpful and has been able to progress on their recovery journey without us. Please do contact us again at any time in the future if you require further support or if you would like to get involved in our Ambassador Programme with a view to improving the service further.
Counselling was brilliant

I have accessed support from Wellbeing with group sessions, telephone counselling and face to face counselling. The telephone counselling was my first entry and I found it very good, and very useful. It's nice that you can do it in your own time at home, and they're there when you need them. I have also had face to face counselling which was absolutely brilliant. The group sessions I went to for depression, I did not find very useful at all, they were quiet and still, and very negative. There wasn't much participation from anyone, and I found it made me feel worse. However all the staff throughout wellbeing are friendly and understanding and they don't judge you.
