  Unfortunately my experience at Hellesdon hospital was a very scary one. Know one explained to me why I was there and I honestly thought I was in prison for a crime that I didn't commit. There was a curtain young man who was very crude and made a very rude remark about me.

  i was an inpatient for 2 weeks at Yare ward. My experience overall was pretty decent. However, staff need to realise that being there is pretty scary. Through no fault of theirs, people with mild to extreme MH issues are bulked together. Witnessing some of the behaviours and distress of other patients can be very overwhelming. I am an adult and have lived a bit so was alright as a whole but I witnessed a young girl petrified at the actions of others. One long term patient whom I know is unwell shouts and swears constantly . Walks around naked. Also steals from other patients. Not ideal when you are trying to get well. Not a huge amount of encouragement . If you stayed in your room all day every day you'd get left to it. Kitchen staff absolutely brilliant. Nigel one of the cleaners extremely pleasant too. Tod is a gem as well as Devan .

  My daughter is currently in there, and i want her out asap. The ward she is on is disgusting and the staff so far dont care about anything .when she askes for help shes not getting it . She is not eating or drinking as the place is dirty and she got told shes ungrateful by a staff member !

  patient stabbed me in head with vape pen and worker harressed me when i was stuck in my room cos had covid- i almost self harmed cos of that, nothing was done about either cos you dont get believed and they lie and only help certain people. i did enjoy going gym and rambles

  I suffer from significant hearing loss and they made no effort to make any accommodations for me. They lecture patients about personal safety when the surroundings are totally unsafe. They need to treat patients as individuals who've had breakdowns and trauma, instead they treat you like all you are is your trauma. There's no compassion or kindness. While I was there I felt like nobody cared about me. I'm a vegetarian and they served me meat and told me there was no other option. I think it needs to be shutdown.

  I know two people who went there intermittently and they never came back the same. They were both making progress with their addictions and MH but every time they came out of Hellesdon they were worse. One of these friends was discharged despite being severely schizophrenic and addicted to alcohol. Not long after we found him lying down on the side of the road, drunk and unaware of where he was. Another friend said the meals were horrendous, once all he got was salmon peeled out of the tin with the bones still intact.

  My daughter spent an unfortunate few days there and the staff were disgusting towards her. The hospital and conditions are dirty. She left there in a dreadful state. 10x worse than when she went in. They do not care. Something needs to be done here. Her mental health has been severely affected by her time there.   Even though I was an informal patient I was denied the opportunity to see my mum or any of my family members who are crucial to my recovery. I was told that I needed to “stop phoning my family” and if I was struggling I needed to “come and get a staff member to talk to”. The patients should not have to seek out a member of staff for emotional support, the staff should be doing regular checks, not just saying hello every few hours. Every day I was there at least one of my medication doses was forgotten about and when I persistently asked for it I was dismissed and told I would get it later, which I didn’t. This resulted in my period starting whilst on the ward as one of my medications was a contraceptive to stop my periods, and I was experiencing extreme cramps to which I was denied pain relief for. I opened up to a staff member about how because of my autistic traits I was finding sensory things difficult on the ward to which later the staff member came back and asked “what did you say was wrong with you?” (Referring to my autism). Multiple times staff tried to persuade me to not involve my mum in my treatment and care plan despite me voicing that I’m very close with my mum and I wanted her involved. I wasn’t allowed or offered any fresh air over the space of 56 hours. They allowed me to have charging cables in my room, which I could’ve easily created a ligature with, even after knowing that one of my plans that resulted in me being in hospital was to create a ligature and hang myself. Everytime I went to the ward office to ask for my medication, for leave, to ask for discharge and to ask for other things, I found all of the ward staff accumulated in the tiny office gossiping and I was waved off or given the shortest answer possible. Overall I had capacity and found the environment was not supportive or adequate at all so god knows what it is like for someone who does not have capacity to be in there

  No one to support you of nhs staff, no one to turn to to talk to. try to control who i speak to. So what is the point of being on the ward if you cannot talk to staff about your illness. Or controlled who i speak to. Still need my mum and sister while on the ward for support. heard from staff next time there section me without a laptop. then i would have no suport at all.
