Older People's Medicine is brilliant

The physio and occupational therapists at the N&N OPM department are brilliant. Because of my husband's Parkinson's he was fast tracked, so we've never had to wait too long. They take a really holistic view of people, and our OT has a specific interest in Parkinson's so is really knowledgeable. The only negative was the time it took to get transferred from Neurology, but in general it's a brilliant service.

More information needed for carers

Some people at the Parkinson's support group I run have reported not having enough information at the point of diagnosis at the N&N. We have given the neurology department lots of information they can use around support networks for carers, but they don't use it. Both Neurology and Older People's Medicine should signpost to local charities like Carers Matter and Parkinson's UK.

Thank you for your comments and feedback about information at the point of diagnosis. I have brought this to the attention of senior managers in the department for them to be aware.

In 2017 I had a keyhole operation to remove a small cancerous cyst. They got every last bit of it out - it's amazing what the surgeons can do. Now the team treat me with regular injections - I'm very thankful for everything.

I had a heart attack a year and a half ago. The ambulance arrived immediately and took me Norwich - they were superb. When I got there they rushed me straight to the operating theatre. Because they were so professional I didn't panic, I just went with it.

Difficult to find disabled parking

It's very difficult to find disabled parking at the N&N. The drop off scheme run by volunteers is good, but I have only recently found out about it. The hospital should publicise the fact that it exists!
Reply from Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH)
Dear Patient
Thank you for your feedback about parking. The volunteer Meet and Greet staff have offered a “drop off” service. They collect patients from Volunteer car drivers and taxis. Switchboard and staff should advise patients that we are able. We will look at ways of publicising this further.
Thank you for your writing about this.

Neurology services very responsive

An example of good practice at NNUH is how straightforward it is to access to the neurology nurses - to be able to speak about the practicalities of dealing with conditions. The neurological helpline is also very responsive and reassuring; when you make an enquiry you usually get a call back within a couple of days.

Car park problems

Submitted by Anonymous1st April 2019
I was in considerable pain and I had to park in the furthest car park because it was so busy. I know it's only a short walk to the East Wing but it felt like a 5 mile hike - I was nearly in tears by the time I got there. Also admin is a problem, the phone will be ringing but no one is ever there to answer.

Access from rural areas is hard

Access to the hospital in rural areas is difficult if you can't drive. It's an £18 taxi each way and we rely on family or members of the community.

Nothing but praise

I've got nothing but praise for all the staff at the cardiology department, everything was wonderful across the board.
I wasn't terribly happy with my consultant's attitude. I was advised privately to stop eating gluten because I've got gut problems. They put me on some medication then told me I should be on a high fibre diet which conflicts with the private advice. They didn't pay attention to the fact that I was much better. They just didn't listen, just giving out blanket advice.
