Badly handled

Advised to attend A&E with serious skin reaction. Receptionist commented that I needed to wait before going into the waiting room so she could check if I was contagious. I understand this is a valid and necessary point, but it was badly handled, as I was stood in a queue of people.
Very good service. Excellent treatment. I came for my initial appointment and then had an endoscopy a few weeks later. They treated me well, I was in and out and can't grumble at all. Everyone was really nice and I was told exactly what would happen. The staff were very open and straightforward.

A&E not safe

A&E is not safe for mental health patients. They are held in a tiny little room with nothing to do. It's no wonder that they keep smashing the place up. I would go out of my head if I was kept in a space like that. There needs to be somewhere safe and appropriate for mental health patients.

Thank you for your comment about the facilities for patients with mental health problems in the hospital’s Emergency Department. This is a difficult situation to solve as the department is very busy and is not an easy environment to be in when you are mentally unwell. The small room is provided to give patients some quiet space away from everyone and where they can be interviewed in private to discuss their concerns. Unfortunately, it is quite a bare room due to necessity but we are in the process of reviewing that area and seeing if there is anything that can be done to enhance the area for the patient and make it more appropriate for the patients using this facility.

Saved my life

This hospital is excellent. When I came in, it was touch and go whether I would actually make it. They thought I was a goner and the team in intensive care saved my life. The doctor is a genius. I was kicked out of intensive care on to Stanhoe ward, where I stayed for several weeks. He cured my infection and I walked out. He's been keeping me well ever since.

Just wish they could do more

The disc fluid in my lower back has gone hard and is causing me intense pain. The hospital claims that they can't operate on it. They've just given me some pain killers which have made me feel very anxious in their side effects. I can't walk well. I had to crawl to the toilet once. I just wish they could do something other than just giving me pills.
We had to go to the Queen Elizabeth to see a physio then go to the orthopaedics department. Both were efficient. the communication between the two departments was excellent, we never had to explain the issues more than once.

Results never came back

My son had to have a spinal check and because of his age had to be put out. He was sent down without his notes and the results never came back. After a 3 month wait my GP had to chase it up and then we were told straight away everything was fine. Communication was poor and given that his notes went missing in the first place it makes you wonder if we were just told that things were fine, when the records had actually been lost.
I've had all 4 of my children at this hospital and have had a good experience every single time. I've asked for as little intervention as possible and my wishes have always been respected. The staff are not pushy and let you do everything in your own time which is great.
